I must add my 2 1/2 cents worth here. I teach many initiation based classes (Huna) and they are not just information or techniques but attunements or initiations or shakti pata (hindu term). This is a change in the subtle bodies, that allow you to bring in certian frequencies of energies to do things like meditation, purification, cleansing and other spiritual advancement or healing.
In the old days you worked along someone like Max or Uncle or Antie and their abilities rubed off onto you, over time. This is resonance or picking up ability by attuning to them. Then people discovered that you can transfer this ability say to heal to another person.
These initiations would be accompanied by ceramony or tests to prove worthyness or make sure we are serious before another level is done.
I teach not just techniques but give specific initiations from the Malaka tradition that gives people abilities to bring these energies in more quickly. This is why many went to India to get these attunements or initiations in the 60's from the Gurus there. I have been to Hawaii many times, do Hula and Tahitian dance here in California but do not presume to call myself a Kahuna, even though this term to me means keeper of the secrets or just simply professional in english language.
The classic problem is distortion of the information over time and distortion of the initiations or energies from the lower self or ego wanting to be important or controlling
