Bill,

Thanks for helping to clarify the difference be-
tween Huna and Ancient Hawaiian Religion, culture,
beliefs, etc.

Huna is not a Hawaiian Religion. HUNA was the name
given by Max Freedom Long to the SYSTEM he re-
covered and synthesized during over fifty years of
research with the help and cooperation of Kahuna
on various islands and with the help of volunteers
throughout the world. HUNA was developed FOR THE
WESTERNER as a practical system of psychology and
magic based on the TECHNIQUES rather than the
specific teachings, rituals, and stories of the
Kahuna of ancient Hawaii, who for centuries kept
them as their closely guarded secrets.
Max chose the word Huna (the Hawaiian word
for "secret") in the 1930's to describe the
psychological/religious METHODS used by the Kahuna
("Keepers of the Secret") in performing their par-
ticular kinds of "miracles" or "magic." Huna was
developed to teach MODERN MAN in Western Culture
to perform some of these miracles, such as healing
the sick, solving personal problems, untangling
financial and social difficulties, and changing
the future. Modern Huna Practitioners perform
these same functions.
Because not everyone can visit, much less
move to Hawaii (this would not even be desireable),
the PRACTICAL PRINCIPLES OF HUNA were arranged
into a western format to be used by EVERYONE who
will investigate and use them. Huna teaches people
how to take charge of their own lives through a
system of internal communication between them-
selves and god without any need of priest, shaman,
or guru to act as intermediary. Huna teaches you
to help yourself.
Huna was never intended to be promoted as
Hawaiian Shamanism, or Kahuna Wisdom, or Ancient
Hawaiian Magic, or any such thing. Max never made
such claims, nor does his legacy, the volunteers
at Huna Research, Inc.

As Max said in 1936 in his Notice to All Kahuna:
"Aloha. I apologize for any mistakes I may have
made in telling of you or of your long-preserved
wisdom. If I have hurt any of you, I ask that I be
allowed to make amends rather than that punishment
be sent. I have violated no confidence. I have
written under permission. I have only love and
gratitude for you in my heart. Aloha nui oe."

Sadly there are many who Sell Huna at ridiculously
high prices, promoting it as traditional Hawaiian
beliefs, dressing up as Kahuna, etc. Max never did
this, nore does HRI participate in this dis-
respectful behavior. HUNA is a GIFT. The President,
the members of the Board of Directors, and Seminar
/Workshop teachers for Huna Research WORK ON A
VOLUNTARY BASIS ONLY. All revenue generated from
donations, courses, goes to the support of HUNA
and to charity.

This is the true spirit of Aloha.
This is Huna.
This is Wisdom free for the taking.

The real teaching comes from within yourself, not
from ANY athority. Huna as properly defined and
shared teaches techniques for accessing that voice
within instead of following a leader.

I thank you for your dedication to truth.

Mahalo,
James Vinson Wingo, Manager
Huna Research, Inc.

P.S.) Thanks also for posting Max's "Huna Prayer"
as "Hawaiian Prayer."
