: You will never find a Hawaiian calling their spiritual system "huna," which merely means "hidden." Their spiritual beliefs were/are completely woven into the fabric of their lives, and there is no Hawaiian word for their religion or their religious practices. : Also, beware of wolves in sheep's clothing. There are a lot of people around claiming first-hand knowledge of "Huna" and claiming to have been trained by "Kahunas" (which just means "expert" - there are MANY types of kahunas). There is a lot of money these days in teaching about "huna," which very few (if any) Hawaiians will do. Serge King, for example, was NEVER trained by a bonafide Hawaiian spiritual leader. It is my understanding from a respected Hawaiian kupuna (elder) that he is under general kapu for continuing to make that claim. And, yes, I have taken a week-long course from him on Kauai. His material is OK, but I have my doubts about it's origin. You can only truly learn about Hawaiian spirituality from the 'aina herself (unfortunately).
: Learn about Hawaiian spirituality from HAWAIIAN sources, not from haole interpretations of Hawaiian material. I've finally started doing that, and it DOES make a BIG difference. There is a lot good material available by mail from Hawaii. I would be glad to post a reading list and sources for the material if anyone is interested.

Dear Bill,
I feel I need to respond to your "Huna is not a Hawaiian religion." I do not understand how you could call Serge King a "Wolf in sheep's clothing." I have worked with his courses and my life has changed for the better because of them. The lessons and teachings I have received from Serge and Aloha International have brought me out of despair and disease and brought me back to a place of love and healing. This has been an on-going journey for me these past two years and Serge's teachings have had much to do with my progress. How a man who gives so much of himself to others can be under "general Kapu" is beyond me. I understand there are different teachings, and to each his own, but to name call to take away from one teaching so as to say yours is the "only true Hawaiian way" is not in the spiritual realm I work with. Who is it that decides who is a true Hawaiian Spiritual Leader? You? Your teacher? Someone who considers himself to be a true leader and is making judgements on another's teachings? I believe God has a hand in the spiritual teachings of this world and accepts all those who are true spiritual leaders. Just because a teaching doesn't serve you does not make it "garbage" for others.
