Yes there is a problem to define "shamanism". I think that shamanism ist not = Siberian shamanism. Isn´t it something more universal? I want to use M. Eliade´s old definition given in his book "Shamanism and archaic..." here.
It´s interesting that Serge K. King stresses exactly this definition in his book "Urban Shaman"! So would you say that he is right in some points and aspects?
I hope it develops some further discussion over Vince´s last question in his statement!

What is reflected in the Polynesian Mythology?!
e.g. Martha Beckwith reported that uhane can go out of the body (kino)- for example in the Pele myth - would you say that there exist a parallel to the practice of shamanic journeys?
What is about storys about tranceformations (e.g. kamapua´a) or communication with ghosts, animals etc.
