The event you refer to was a religious Firewalk put on by my kumu, Michael McDermott.
I posted to Kahuna I Ke Umu Ki Michael and asked him about Willey. We'll see. If the fire was already sentient, then all the fire would look at would be David's heart.
The Aumakua and/or the goddess Wahinenuiho`alani aren't prejudiced against scientists. They respond to the smallest touch.
David was surrounded by Priests of the Fire during his Firewalk.

Nor am I surprised that Philip was standing all day a few short feet from Kahuna I Ke Umu Ki John Shango.
But it does show that Philip is in touch with the Poe Aumakua.
