Aloha,
You said: "Huna Initiations" seemed to be a fancy way for American trainers to demand a lot of money for esoteric mumblings that
reflected Western alchemy much more than pre-Christian Hawaiian mysticism."
I was "initiated" by Kahuna Nui Max Freedom Long about 1968. ("initiaytion means to start. Anyone who starts any sort of training under a kumu (teacher by any other name) is being "initiated.
Huna doesn't sdeem to me to have ANY alchemical stuff in it at all. Can you point out somerthing of Max's (who is the founder of Huna, afgter all), and point out to me what you think is alchemical?
You said, "pre-Christian Hawaiian mysticism". Yoiuu mean the Ho`omana temple Priests? THEIR religion? Well how many Hawaiians of today know much about that? Huna has NOTHING to do, necessarily with the religious bent of any living Hawaiian. We MIGHT have some things in common with Ho`omana, but who can say?
Nice post though.
So I think you are, like so many others, messed up by going back and forth between two languages. Kahuna Nui Max Freedom Long, named his religion after a Hawaiian word, "huna". Huna doesn't mean secret in English. In English, Huna refers only to the religion founded by Kahuna Nui Max Freedom Long. Nor is it "huna" in Hawaiian. In Hawaiian, "Huna" becomes "`o huna", not "huna". See? Ok. all better now.
Your pal,
