Kahuna Nui Max Freedom Long was initiated and adopted by Kahuna Nui William Tufts Brigham, who was in turn initiated and adopted by the last three living Kahuna I Ke Umu Ki (Firewalking Prists).
But the initiation wasn't as powerful as it might have been, and more iunstruction was needed.
Max's teacher in the use of mana was Baron Fersen.
BTW: You were correct in the spelling of his name, I thoughts it was "Ferson".
In any case. I checked with Barnes and Noble and they have a copy of his book (used), THE SCIENCE OF BEING. It was originally a six month course, and if you think you can do it, then I'd suggest you get it! :)
