I just received a book that I found at Amazon.Com - "Polynesian Religion"
by E.S. Craighill Handy (co-author of the "Polynesian Family System in Ka`u."
It looks like it's an excellent text (basically his doctor's thesis combined with
5 years of direct observation in the field; originally publised by the Bishop
Museum in 1927, (It's a bit pricey - $60.)
In the introduction he says, "In only one pigeonhole may Polynesian Religious
be safely placed for reference, and that is a very large one. labeled 'Polynesian
Culture in It's Entirety.'"
Anyway - it looks like a great book - covers, compares and contrasts religious
beliefs across the whole of Polynesia. The section on Mana looks especially
interesting. I'll make postings on interesting things as they show up in the
book.
Malama pono, everybody.
